Why do crowns cost so much?

“Why do crowns cost so much?” I get asked this question from time to time; it’s a great question and one that I would love to explain.

First and foremost, there are numerous hours that go into making a crown that will last for years and years. At The Art of Dentistry, we only want the best for our patients, and we strive to do the very best quality work. With that said, we are so fortunate to have one of the best laboratories in the world right here in our area, Frontier Dental Laboratory. When I attend my annual American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) meetings, Frontier Dental Lab is always mentioned as one of the premier dental labs in the country. When I go to their facility in El Dorado Hills, I see cases in progress from all over the world. The attention to detail given to every single case is without compromise.

We have purchased a new scanner that takes digital images of the prepared teeth, and we email those images to the lab for fabrication of the new crown. The detail and accuracy are fantastic, making for a long-lasting, beautiful crown.

Secondly, a new material we are using, Zirconia, has the same strength as metal crowns and looks extremely natural. Zirconia crowns are much stronger than the older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
